Hmmm.... Reading for my history class and came across something that I feel is both ironic and foreboding for the US.
"404 BCE: The final defeat of Athens in the War
- her defeat meant the end of democracy which was blamed for the military disaster (re: the failed attack on Syracuse and defeat of the Athenian army)"
Everyone talks about the comparison between the Roman Empire and the United States but I think the comparison between Greece and the US is pretty apt.
The image of the Greeks coming together to fight the Persians, only to end up fighting each other, with huge numbers of Athenians dying of plague is a scary one, because I can see it coming for us as well.
There is always an end to every great thing and we must never forget it.
Anyone have thoughts? In a very reflective mood, not condemning, just thinking and comparing, listening to sad music.
On a completely different note, does anyone else listen to John Lennon's music and get sad? I was listening to the song "Grow Old With Me" and it just made me sob. Is it just me?
Grow Old With Me- The Postal Service (yousendit)- This isn't the best version of this song but I like it and it was the one that broke me.
Mother- Christina Aguliera- Love, love, LOVE this version of this song.
Real Love- Regina Spektor- for my
lily_shrike.
Watching the Wheels- Matisyahu
I think I had to reach an age where I could appreciate what Lennon was singing/writing about. When kids in my graduating class *koff*Jana*koff* were obsessing over his solo work, I was like, whatev, you know? I was all Beatles, all the time. And yet, now, I hear his words and they hit me in the gut and I can't breathe.
I have been inspired to fic by all this, just not sure how it will all play out. Hmmm....
ETA: Looking for a beta for a WIP, SPN, wincesty. Part 1 done, know where it's going, mostly, need some feedback and beta help. Any takers, hit me here. Thanks
